RTA Dubai at a Glance
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai was established in 2005 in order to plan and provide an integrated and sustainable transport system in Dubai and between Dubai and other emirates of the UAE. RTA Dubai provides public transport services that include the Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, Abras, Dubai Bus, Dubai Water Bus, Water Taxi and Dubai Ferry, as well as Dubai Taxi and its authorized cab operators.
World Expo 2020 Embraces Low-Cost, Low-Carbon Transportation With New Buses
Boasting advanced urban mobility solutions, Dubai is renowned for the Road and Transport Authority’s (RTA) utilization of cutting-edge technology in transportation systems, including smart traffic systems and autonomous vehicles. As the city was preparing to host the World Expo 2020, RTA took steps into further improving its public transportation to ensure that visitors can move around the city with ease. One key aspect was the enhancement of the public transport system through bus services as an eco-friendly, reliable and affordable alternative to private transportation during the Expo. To achieve this, RTA increased its fleet of new public transport buses in 2018 and 2019 by 690 vehicles through two public tenders.
The Right Switch for the Seamless Integration of Systems and Devices Under Extreme Weather Conditions
TRONTEQ, in partnership with Luminator Technology Group and other collaborators, provided RTA with its specialized ROQSTAR 8-Port M12 Managed PoE switches for public transport vehicles. These switches have a compact design and are highly resistant to shock, vibration, and variations in weather conditions, making them suitable for use in transit vehicles. They also adhere to the international standard for interoperability, ITxPT, guaranteeing their compatibility with the complex network in RTA’s buses.
By seamlessly integrating nearly the whole ITS system, consisting of LED Signs, TFT Screens, Router, Telematic, APC, and AVM, the ROQSTAR Ethernet switches played a crucial role in establishing an efficient and reliable bus network in Dubai. Moreover, the CCTV system in the buses, including cameras and recorders, is powered by the PoE of the switch, making it essential for them to function. The management functions of the switch also allow for configurations whenever they are needed, ensuring complete control over the network.
What is also noteworthy is that the ROQSTAR Ethernet switches continued to function with reliability and full functionality despite the extreme weather conditions in Dubai. The World Expo 2020 was held in the hot summer months, when the outside temperature can reach up to 50°C (122°F) during the day, with high air humidity. In fact, temperatures of up to 80°C (176°F) have been recorded inside vehicles with the doors closed and the bus fully off, which is making it imperative that vehicle systems can perform even under the harshest environmental conditions. Nonetheless, the switches provided a smooth transportation experience to World Expo visitors, a testament to their ability to withstand these conditions.
ROQSTAR Ethernet Switches: Meeting High Standards of the Transport Industry
ROQSTAR M12 Ethernet Switches from TRONTEQ were crucial in seamlessly integrating various ITS systems for Dubai’s new public transportation fleet. With ITxPT labeling and all necessary approvals for use in transit vehicles, today these managed switches provide a robust network infrastructure that is also adaptable for future applications. Since 2019, over 2500 switches have been installed in the RTA Dubai fleet of public transport buses with a near-zero failure rate, demonstrating their robustness and reliability in the demanding conditions of the transportation industry.
